Getting Real With Jennifer Poole
If you or someone close to you has ever suffered from an eating disorder or even just struggled with yo-yo dieting then you should read the book Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain. I have always been a fan of Portia and always thought she was so beautiful. She didn’t think she was, and she nearly died trying to make herself thin and “perfect.”
I remember when I first saw her on Ally McBeal and she commanded attention just standing there. It is shocking to hear that during that same time she was telling herself how fat and ugly she was. And if you remember this is during the same time that everyone thought Calista Flockhart was the one with the eating disorder.
It just goes to show that so many women, even ones who are stunning, think they aren’t good enough. I could relate to many of her struggles especially back when I was a teenager and trying to become a model. I never would have expected Portia to be the voice of eating disorders, but after reading her book, I think she puts herself out there for us all to relate to and learn from. Her story is honest, real, and one I think every woman – especially those with daughters should read.
It really is amazing to see who’s suffered from eating disorders. I have a few friends who’ve struggled with eating disorders in the past, but have conquered them and gone on to become successful, well adjusted, healthy women. Portia truly is beautiful, and it’s women like her, and women like Tyra Banks, who are the role models that speak out against the “thin” and “perfect”.
