The basic rule of losing weight is to burn more calories each day than you consume. It’s really that simple.

Sort of.

There are a few other factors that come into play when you’re trying to lose weight.

You’re Not a Man

You’re automatically at a disadvantage if you’re a woman. Sorry, but men naturally have higher metabolisms than women. Men have more lean muscle than women, and muscle burns calories faster. Women, being designed primarily to support life, have extra fat genetically encoded into their bodies to make them a cushy environment for babies. Worse yet, when men do need to lose weight, they’ll lose it faster than women will.

You’re Not as Young as You Used to Be

The older you get, the harder it is to lose weight, because your metabolism slows. The older you get, the more important it becomes to maintain and even build lean muscle to combat the one to two percent per year metabolism drop you start experiencing in your 30s.

Genetics play a huge role in your ability to lose weight and maintain weight loss. Your genes also play a role in your body shape, which can also impact your ability to lose weight easily or quickly. Apple-shaped women are likely to be able to lose weight easier than pear-shaped women, but apples are also at a much higher risk for heart disease and stroke.

You can do 3 things to improve your ability to lose weight.

  1. If you are struggling to lose weight, consider refocusing your energies on building lean muscle mass.You do not have to look like a female body builder to have lean, sinewy muscles that fuel your metabolism.
  2. Change your diet. While muscle helps increase your metabolism, fat cells slow it down. Swap out fatty foods for extra veggies, cut out trans fats and high fructose corn syrup completely, and be sure what fat you do eat is the good-for-you kind.
  3. Exercise regularly. Can’t fit in a 30-minute workout? That’s ok! Three 10-minute bursts throughout the day work equally well, if not better, than a sustained 30-minute workout. Just make sure you are getting your heart rate up and work up a sweat.
